Amber marched down the rank and file, inspecting the troops. They will little more than an unruly mob of angry peasants, but Amber was sure they had what it took to, at the very least, provide a distraction while she broke into the castle. She had trained them herself, after all. They weren't very skilled or all that strong, but they were hungry. Literally. There was little to eat in the village, at least partially due to the policies of the so-called "King." But they were lean, mean, and ready to stab somebody with a pitchfork.

It had been about a week and a half since the fall of the Death Egg, by Amber's reckoning. Metal Sonic 1.0 assured her that, since there was only seven days in a Gregorian week, it was exactly two weeks since Echeon had left them behind, but Amber wasn't quite ready to adjust to a new calender system just yet. She had little time to dawdle, as she had been searching for the Chaos Emeralds since she learned they had been scattered yet again.

Her search had taken her to the small desert kingdom of Shmiraq, or, as the current ruler most recently dubbed it, "Margaritaville." It was little more than a large village surrounding an oasis with a small castle nearby. It had gotten by just fine due in large part to trade with neighboring Soleanna. The larger kingdom's destruction had destabilized the entire region, and Shmiraq got the worst of it. Its economy crumbled, its infrastructure shattered, and a power vaccuum lead to a war that Shmiraq was practically a casuality of.

But it was a little under two weeks ago that the new king had come to power. He used to be little more than a petty thug until he got his hands on a gem that granted him extraordinary powers. The citizenry was already living in fear of him by the time Amber and Metal Sonic 1.0 breezed into town. Amber had little doubt that the king held a Chaos Emerald, and a ragtag resistence group was already starting to organize. Amber offered to help in exchange for the king's Chaos Emerald, which she desperately needed to save her own kingdom.

Amber climbed onto a stack of crates and addressed the crowd. "A week ago you were oppressed peasants! Today, you're an unruly mob with torches and pitchforks! But come tomorrow, you will be heroes! An example will be made here today! You will show the would-be despots of this world that Shmiraq will not simply lay down in the face of terror! You will not be bullied and tormented and taken advantage of! You will pick up your swords, you will pick up your tools, you will march right up to their gates and they will know what one people is capable of! I cannot guarantee you will survive the coming battle, but one way or another you will know freedom!"

A cheer rang through the crowd as Amber leapt from the crates. They fell into step behind her has she marched them up to the castle at the edge of town. Amber was certain history would be made here today, one way or another.

The king stood behind his guards. The castle did not have a moat, and therefore did not have a drawbridge. It did, however, have a set of large, wooden doors. At least it did, before Soleanna was destroyed. The earthquakes caused by the planet-shattering laser had nearly demolished the castle, and the door had yet to be rebuilt. All in due time, though, for the so-called king, Emaro Gonzales. What had once been a punk from a run-down slum on the former Soleanna-Sliam border had grown to a powerful king, wielding a purple gem with mysterious power. He knew it was a Chaos Emerald, of course. There was little else it could be.

He had been offered power by those birds, and he had taken it. The one in the lead, a burrowing owl with a monstrous darkness exuding from his eyes, had given him that gem. The strange gem also emitted the darkness, and with it he could manipulate minds, among other things. It looked like a Chaos Emerald, those mystical gems he remembered from the black and white television set his family had. They were dead, of course. Emaro had killed them himself, just to make sure. And now a peasant uprising? Emaro scoffed. They would be no match for him with his emerald.

Unbeknown to anyone involved, it was not a Chaos Emerald. For one, it was not the correct shape, being a perfect twenty-sided polyhedron. Also, it was not even technically purple. He held it up to the light, letting its darkness wrap around him. His irises had darkened to pitch since he had ascended to the throne.

"Captain, the peasants are approaching!"

"Bah. I'll handle it myself." The dark-eyed hedgehog said, marching forward. The hill up to the castle was flank on either side by a deep ditch, the only real defense mechanism that the half-destroyed castle had. Emaro lifted the shadowgem. Tendrils spouted from it, tendrils that Amber might have recognized. The people surrounding Amber fell to the ground as the shadow spread outward. Metal Sonic 1.0, meanwhile, watching from the town church tower. He thought it was not his right to interfere with such matters.

Amber froze in shock as she saw the dark tendrils streaming from Emaro's hands. This was not the power of a Chaos Emerald after all. It was something far more sinister.

"Dworzag in the morning," she cursed as the villagers writhed on the ground behind her. "It's the work of those damned birds!"

She was also cursing a lack of cloud cover, but that hardly mattered. It was unnecessary drama, as she could just shoot lightning from her fingers. It was still a difficult shot to make engulfed in pain-wracking shadows, but she loosed a bolt his way. One powerful enough to at least stun him and stop his counter-offensive, but not enough to kill him.

Once freed from the darkness, the air around Amber crackled as she ionized it to alter its flow. She charged directly for him as fast as she was able. "EMARO! Your tyranny ends here!"

The lightning knocked the tendrils loose for a split second. "What? How the hell did you--" he started. He moved out of the way just long enough for her to pass, the electrified air causing painful bursts of static between his quills. Gritting his teeth, he yelled at his solders, "Attack, you idiots!" They rushed forward, some moving for Amber as others descended on the villagers. The loosely-armored men that passed were stopped dead in their tracks by Metal Sonic, who had lost no time in getting there. He reformed slowly, the quicksilver of his liquid form sliding up onto itself before solidifying into the frightening form he had taken so many years ago, when he had been known as "Neo Metal Sonic". Gasps and whimpers passed through the small group of soldiers, who the peasants practically outmatched. Many were peasants themselves, working for Emaro to feed their families.

Amber skidded to a stop as she passed Emaro. Spinning around, she gathered electricity around her fist. She released it into the air, causing an explosion that could bowl the guards over. With that out of the way, she marched Emaro's way again.

"You've been a bad boy, Emaro Gonzales!" she declared. "And I'm here to take away your toys!"

Panicking, Emaro tried the Shadow Gem again. The tendrils emerged but dissolved as they neared Amber; something was protecting her. It certainly wasn't her electricity, as that had failed to go up against those dark jewels before. "Ah! What's happening?!" he yelled, stumbling back as the Shadowgem cracked. He fell down the steep slope into the ditch, slamming his head against its rocky opposite side. His arm snapped with sicking crack, his forearm instantly inflaming. He cried out in pain; the peasants yelled out in victory. Metal Sonic made quick work of the guards, dashing back and forth, his arms liquefying and slapping them down.

Amber stood at the top of the slope, tsking down at Emaro. "Not only are you a fraud, but so is your power." She put a foot down on the dropped Shadow Gem, allowing it to shatter under her weight. She slid down the slope to Emaro's side. "Stand up, Gonzales."

The second the gem was crushed, the shadows expanded, sliding painlessly up Amber's leg. It then constricted, tightening around her. A shred of the darkness linked to a large mass coming from the castle. Within, a small owl--specifically, a pygmy owl--exuded darkness that enveloped everything past the castle gates. Several soldiers were consumed, devoured by the ebony beast, the owl's form standing out in the middle of the courtyard. Although Amber could not see the Shadowbrother, she could definitely feel it, flaring pain piercing into the inner portions of her leg.

Amber's leg buckled as pain shot through it, causing her to stumble. She knelt down and saw the patch of darkness clinging to her thigh. She gritted her teeth as it burned away at her nerves. Glancing back up, she could see the shadows consuming the castle and felt that dire presence. She was now acutely aware this was more than a simple case of opportunistic domineering.

Amber swore inwardly. 'A thug on a power trip I can handle, a pretender to the throne I can deal with, but these guys are the main grid. They know what they're doing. I've got to figure out how to compete with this...'

Amber knew out to generate electricity, which wasn't going to work, but she also knew how to channel that electricity into light. She didn't know if she could use light as a weapon, but this was as good a time to experiment as any. Sparks danced around the fingers on one hand, fluctuating to glow rather than to burn. Once she had a glowing ball with the brightness of a single lightbulb in her hand, she brought it close to her leg. If it could at least banish the darkness clinging to her leg, she might just have a fighting chance.

The darkness wavered but did not move until Metal Sonic approached it. His arm reshaped into a blade, cutting down, his Chaos-resonating body repelling the shadows away, cutting them through shear repellent force. He helped Amber up, staring neutrally down at Emaro as loose shadows from the crushed Shadowgem tangled around him, strangling him. Without warning he sloshed down into his liquid form and zipped ahead, following the retreating tendrils of shadow. Something was definitely amiss, especially with Metal Sonic getting himself involved. Behind them, the villagers were beating down the outnumbered guards, some of whom had turned on their peers.
