After a brief train trip north, Amber and Truff were dropped off at the last small town before the Rail Canyons, that wide stretch of badlands complimented by mysterious metal rails winding between the spires. Extreme Gear junkies called this place a haven, and few called it home--just too damned dry and unstable for a group of people to live. Adjusting his jeans, which were heavily soiled and caked with dry mud, the rabbit hopped off the train into the dusty, western-style town, the ground mostly parched save the occasional tuft of grass or dandelions.

His gauntlet balling into a fist, he walked forward, turning back for Amber to follow. The Gear on his feet made him at least two inches taller, though it felt natural since his long, bent legs gave him a variance of height, anyway. "Here we are... the last stop before the canyons. How old is that map, anyway? It looks old, but I always thought the rails were a recent addition."

Amber hopped off the train, her scooter slung over her shoulder. She looked at the worn-out wooden buildings as the approached Truff. Buildings not made of metal were still a little new to her, and the western-style buildings looked old besides. She had to wonder how you could make buildings out of such a weak material.

"My mom says its an antique," Amber replied. "From what I think the humans call 'The Age of Sail,' but considering how well it's held up so far it's probably a reproduction or even a fake. The rails aren't on the map, but the canyon certainly is." She produced her pendulum and let it dangle from her hand. "Behold, the magic pendulum. Let's see if I can't get a fix on something here..."

Turning back, Echeon surveyed the landscape past the town, which did not go for much more than four standard city blocks. It was simply a railroad outpost, nothing but a mail processing building and a gas station. It would probably be bustling with hikers during most other times of the year, but it was near summer and it was hot. Truff could smell his own putrid scent as he expended heat through his ears and mouth, his jaw agape. So hot...

"I say we get going right away. There's absolutely no shade here, and I'm frying"

Not getting anything definite, she frowned slightly and put the pendulum away. She exhaled as she glanced up at the bleary sky. It was indeed hot, and the sun's rays were overbearing even though Amber didn't wear much more than the shoes on her feet.

"Yeah, let's get going," she said, starting into a brisk stride. "I've got a good feeling about this direction."

Following, Truff didn't active his Gear. Not yet. He wanted to be sure they were going on the rails before he activated those, still unfamiliar with how it gained power. Solar? Maybe. Would definitely be useful in this situation. The threat of being battery-powered was ever present, but he would think something like this would require a battery much larger. Chaos Drive? Yes... that seemed likely. Almost limitless power supply but only gave lower amounts of voltage. That had to be it. He still decided not to kick them on, since they were walking through town. "Lead the way."

Amber was indeed heading for the canyon. She slung the scooter off her shoulder and hopped on it in one smooth motion. The dik-dik moved at a quick pace at first, but was rapidly slowing down as drew closer. The sight of the canyon itself drew her attention away from powering her vehicle, eventually causing it to touch the ground and skid to a stop. An expression of awe stretched across her face.

Rail Canyon was mesmerizing. She couldn't remember when she saw its like, if at all. There wasn't much one could see from within Adalca's walls, but when she was little she loved going up to the observation deck and looking out at the world. Everything was bigger then, but Adalca just seemed to shrink around her and there was always a definite lack of space. When she left, she half-expected a feeling of the world exploding around her, the boundaries of the universe expanding to the infinite. She got something like that, only more like disappearing into murky uncertainty under the bombardment of excessive options.

But now this was more like what she had expected. Before, she didn't know what to do with it, but this was the application of freedom. She could see it in action. Other people were already here, perhaps obsessive enough about their sport to see excessive heat as an advantage, freeing up the rails from those not so willing to endure. They raced, they flew, they tricked, they defied gravity itself in the pursuit happiness. This is what you do with all that space.

Amber felt her eyes begin to water. She wasn't sure if it was the view or her eyes drying out watching it.

((Crap. Partway through this, I realized current events might contradict this. Aw well.))

[[[If you are referring to Mk VII, he didn't change much about the Canyon. Probably some stragglers here and there. We'll see.]]]

Truff stared out at the ocean of spires and rails, mouth open in awe and due to the extreme heat. "It's beautiful," he commented. He imagined what it would be like at sunset, the sun disappearing behind them, Amber's fur so soft and delica-- NO. On a mission. While he combated his testosterone levels, completely unaware of how futile any attempts at romance would be with this particular dik-dik, a small troupe of Gear racers set up on top of a rather large, flat-topped spire some distance away. It was reachable directly by a single rail from where Truff and Amber stood, though they appeared to be only mirages in the quicksilver of the midday heat.

The group consisted of eight individuals, each with no protect gear save three who chose to wear helmets. Though primarily board riders, three had donned skates, floating lazily in the air, their knees bent to allow them to sit on the air. The board riders were primarily hedgehogs, speed demons trying to copy the famous Sonic of their species, but there were also two birds and a curious cat, a ridiculous ":3" on her face. A single golden stripe ran down her back, contrasting her black fur.

Amber noticed the line-up racers, though she had to squint a little. She knew a starting line when she saw one. Giving Truff a quick grin, she zipped over and attempted to find a place in line.

"Hey there, fellows!" she announced with the exaggerated enthusiasm of someone trying to sound like they fit in only to sound incredibly dated. Possibly on purpose. "Great day for a race! I can't wait to grind some ollies!"

How Amber raced off surprised Truff, but he followed, kicking his skates on and skidding the way across the rail. Her first scream drowning over the distance to the starting line, the eight Gearheads didn't notice her until she was already there. "A girl?" "Who the hell is she?" "Pfft, look at how small she is!" One of them actually greeted her--the black feline with the golden stripe.

"Hi!" she yelled, forcefuly grabbing Amber's hand and shaking it, almost knocking her off the scooter. She had a board strapped on her back, waiting to release it until the race started. Her handshake, however, was odd: what little Amber felt of her claws were cold and metallic, and looking now they glinted in the sunlight. The stripe cat continued to hold that ridiculous smile. "Wanna raaaaaaace?" she asked, taunting Amber, circling her and tugging playfully on her ears. She seemed to have the mannerisms of a common house cat.

Amber ignored the incredulous remarks and smiled almost obliviously at them. The cat's greeting nearly threw her to the ground, and her handshake nearly pulled her arm out of its socket. Amber giggled dumbly as she returned the greeting, but her expression turned to intrigued curiosity as the cat circled her. 'Metal claws? Fixed expression? How bizarre. The stripe's kinda hot, though.'

She resisted the temptation of going all Pepe le'Pew on her possibly deranged new friend in front of everybody while the feline pulled on her ears. She laughed as she gently removed the playfully torturous fingers. "Frisky one, ain't'cha? Gonna haveta put a bell on you. Hells Yeah, I wanna race! We gonna juice it, or what?"
