The experimental rocket spun as it flew. Ayreon had not anticipated this; the taste of vomit still lingered in his mouth. The air-corroded bolts of the rocket had weakened to the point of breaking, and eventually did, several hundred feet in the air. His eyes actually took on the unsteadied shake of fear, hastily moving himself farther into the rocket and collapsing the shattered remnants around him into a loose orb-shape. The engine flew off and exploded a mile in the air, while the tip of the rocket, heavy with the weight of twice the proposed carrying weight it was intended for, smashed into a rocky outcropped, causing a small landslide as its shrapnel dug into the bedrock. Ayreon's makeshift capsule, however, skittered across the sands, flying over a dune before finally flying apart and turning him into a flailing ragdoll. If he had hit a rock or boulder he most certainly would have broken most of the bones in his body, but luckily he managed to simply toss along a flat stretch of desert grit, finally coming to a stop on the boiling hot sand. The sun was starting to set in the last half of the day, and while the cold temperatures of the night, which he had become so decidedly used to, would be comfortable, the hot sands beneath him did not. He scurried beneath a boulder's lengthening shadow, still quite shellshocked as other parts of the missile fell around him. |

Clutching his chest, Xern felt as the shard in his hand radiated warmth, its crimson glow concealed in the pallor of his robes whilst he slithered away from the crater. It'd been only a couple of hours since he'd found himself at the bottom of the crater, however it felt like it'd been longer. All too familiarized with the desert surface, he didn't mind the abating light of the sun as it bore down upon him. Nor the burning sands at his feet, his calloused soles provided him with all of the footwear he'd need for the remainder of his life, 'lest he step into lava or some other surface of that nature. With nowhere else to go but home, he began his trek through the desert, hoping to catch some fortuitous wind to help him skid over the surface of the desert. The dunes looked still, as the air around Xern seemed in stasis, the entire scene seemed too quiet for him, almost as though some augury of malportent. He scanned his surroundings for what had brought about this trepidation before him, but he found nothing -nothing-... that is until the first piece of shrapnel fell to his sides. He could only stare blankly as chunk of metal fell from the sky and cleaved unto the sands, burrowing deep unto the wastes, whilst kicking up a cloud of dust all around him. Xern had but narrowly avoided the piece of shrapnel when another fell near him. With but fractions of a second to react, he quickly jerked his way out of the metal's trajectory and blazed to safety, streams of fire allowing him to propel himself away in time. Raising his brow he looked towards the sky for any more shrapnel to fall. |

As the lizard looked to the sky, the rocket engine erupted in flames, finally exploding and sending bits of molten and warps metal across the desert. His entire head was wracked by the sudden, ear-shattering crash of tons of rock, the front of the rocket plowing head-on into the cliff side. By the forces of sheer luck alone, Xern had avoided the main brunt of the cascade, a thick field of shattered, red-hot steel cooling in the sand around him. A blot of sapphire crawled amongst the chaos, moving behind a boulder several meters ahead of him and to his right, a black-tipped and scaly tail whipping behind it. Ayreon, however, had not noticed the strange, fire-wielding reptile, his entire body shaking involuntarily. His pupils flared and thinned violently, pulsating and making the entire world seem like a strobe light. His two-pronged teeth ground together, some of their tips shattering, the teeth automatically loosening and new ones shifting into place, a perk of his unique beginnings. After the rain of shrapnel halted, he regained control, his purple eyes leveling out to near-invisible slits, breaking the brunt of the sun's brilliance. He scurried out from the boulder, dashing at a hobbling pace across the hot sands. The sun was setting, and somewhere far off her could feel the pulse of raw electricity and technology. Her did not not Xern, nor would he have stopped if her had; he had a mission, simplistic and foolish though it was: vengeance. Edited by Fission, Oct 18 2009, 06:52 AM.
