okay so I'm asking you highly intelligent people, what exactly is boredom? How does it come about? And lastly why does it seem like no matter how much we try, we cant prevent our selves from being bored?

Umm... How exactly did you find this site? But my honest response is to find something you enjoy, and do it. Asking people what boredom is, probably won't help. |

Hmm.... Boredom eh?..... I would describe boredom as an undesirable emotion, cause from lack of interesting things to do, or entertaining things. Boredom.... is like a log sitting in the middle of a flat field. You're going nowhere. While being entertained, is like going down a steep hill. You don't know where you're going, but it's one hell of a ride. |

Boredom is a withdrawal symptom from being distracted. Unused to your own thoughts, you crave something to take your attention away, even if you don't know what. If something is boring you, it's not a sufficient distraction. Its possible to sit around doing nothing and not be bored, particularly if you're the kind of person who likes to think to yourself. |

Pwnt. To me, boredom is a withdrawal symptom (as Avernale puts it). We're all tuned to individual interests, which aren't being met if nothing happens, or if the wrong thing happens. It's not so much as activity/lack thereof so much as an unsatisfied condition. That brings it to the next point, it's possible to be doing what interests you, and still be bored. That's when you start looking for a better way to challenge yourself - boredom is ease and monotony. That is what boredom is to me - apathy, uninterest, inattention, and lack of challenge. And then there's Wikipedia, which is boring to even read. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boredom The complete opposite is 'Flow', where you're completely immersed in what you're doing, with little-to-no regard to external factors or what's around you. Here's a boring little fact: the concept of flow was architected by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. Have fun pronouncing that. It's "cheek-sent-me-high-ee". Distribute estranged giggles as appropriate.
