COMMON GAME ELEMENTS
(As penned by Coca~Cola Bottling Co. presents His Non-Sequiturity, the Once-Undisputed Grand Lord Fuhrer King Leader Master Gamefling the Allegedly Rocktastical, of the No-Longer Official Lords and Imaginary Ladies of was once Randomness, but Now Merely Entails the Overuse of Popular Memes™)

Brief Warning: From this point onward, I will cease to utilize the formal tone that my counterpart has used thus far in this document. Neat Freaks, read at your own risk.

Throughout the RPG, you will often encounter players with items and tactics that you may be unfamiliar with. Listed below is a brief sampling of game elements that you will likely encounter in your travels...

~Chaos Emeralds~
"The ultimate power..."
-Shadow the Hedgehog, several times over the course of 3 games at LEAST.

The Grand MacGuffins of the Sonic Universe, the matter of whether or not these seven radiant gems are actually Emeralds and not merely colored glass or some OTHER manner of crystal is a subject of great controversy. All debate aside, their value is unmistakable, as the Chaos Emeralds are the single greatest energy source on the planet. Each individual Emerald is capable of granting power to an entire continent, and many mechanisms and devices worldwide have been constructed with the intention of using the Emeralds as their primary power source.

The most common use of a Chaos Emerald is a direct infusion of power into the holder of one, allowing him/her to produce a variety of unique and interesting effects. This power is known as Chaos Potential, and every being on the planet is gifted with a unique form of it. Some display an increase in stamina and strength, others gain the power to slow down or even stop time, others still are able to gain baffling amounts of power when in possession of one or more. Well known examples include the Chaos Control, power over time and space; Chaos Blast, a detonation of raw power centered around the wielder; Chaos Blackout, a fell power that drowns all light in a sea of blinding darkness... the possibilities are infinite. However, most beings only have access to a single power, the exceptions either having trained themselves to use the Emeralds exceptionally, or being the rare few born with a true connection to them.

It is no surprise that the Chaos Emeralds are valued around the world, though obtaining one is no small feat. For reasons unknown, the Emeralds will rarely remain with a single holder for very long. Often, a person is able to gather all seven, only to lose them later on after using their power once. The Emeralds seem to move about randomly when not actively in the possession of somebody; reports of the gems randomly disappearing from museum displays only to be found in the middle of a jungle halfway across the planet are not uncommon. They also have a habit of dispersing, rarely being encountered near to each other.

Now, to the in-game stuff: Your character may NOT start out in possession of a Chaos Emerald. An Emerald is earned via RPing, either by actively seeking one out or stumbling across it by chance. The chances of you finding a Chaos Emerald are equivilent to your activity on the board: members who rarely post at all or go missing for months at a time will rarely ever encounter them, while dedicated members may wind up finding 2 or even 3. Similarly, if a player is inactive for 14 days or more without first giving notice, he or she is stripped of all possessed Emeralds, so they may be re-integrated into the game. This does not mean that they may not be regained at a later date, but try not to push your luck.

~Chaos Shards~

The Emeralds, however, are not the only source of such great power. Small shards of crystal, known (not surprisingly) as Chaos Shards radiate about the same amount of power, though are highly unstable. They are believed to be formed by long-standing Chaos radiation on a single point, particles coalescing into a single, fragile Shard.

In game, they allow the single, one-time use of a Chaos Potential. Afterwards, they immediately shatter, dissolving into a fine mist of glass-like grains. Characters can hold up to 7 (seven) before their power becomes too unstable, upon which the user must discard or use the extra Shard. They are very rare!

~Giant Rings~

These mysterious rings appear to be gateways to the Bonus Stage areas, somewhere within a ridiculous version of the Twilight Zone another dimension. These rings take players to Bonus Stages, which allow the chance for special items--such as the Giant Ring itself, which can be used to buy any item, no matter how ridiculous--as well as rare items such as Chaos Emeralds and Shards.

~Chao~
"Nyap."
-Infant Chao

Some wonder why Chao are considered to be 'artificial life forms'. There does not seem to be any known source of origin for them, nor has anyone stepped up claiming credit for their existence. Truly, they are a mystery, though the creatures themselves are quite simple. Allegedly under the watchful eye of their guardian deity Chaos (Who really hasn't done ANYTHING in the way of protection except for laying waste to an entire uninvolved city in 1999), Chao live relatively peaceful existances. They are fancied by many as pets, despite being rumored to have nigh-sentient intelligence, and a mass-produced robotic version known as the Omochao was built in their image!

Your average Chao is a stubby-limbed imp-like creature, with a round body and a teardrop-shaped head with a small orb hovering just over the tip of the cranium. The most common color scheme is blue and yellow, though some Chao have drastically differing colors! Throughout their growth, Chao can undergo startling transformations, both physically and mentally, depending on their surroundings. They are known to feed on energy sources such as the Chaos Drives used to power GUN robots, and can even siphon small amounts of life energy from creatures they touch, adapting their form to resemble the subject. As a result, after the infant stage, few Chao look exactly the same.

A Chao's lifecycle is an oddity that science remains unable to explain entirely. For reasons unknown, Chao are able to restart their life cycles after a certain period of time. Even if they are not fully grown, a Chao will occasionally form an egg-like pupa around itself, and if environmental conditions are just right, the creature reincarnates as an infant. In rare tragic cases, a Chao may fail to reincarnate, simply vanishing inside the pupa as if it had never existed. For the most part, however, the reincarnation cycle usually goes off without a hitch... though many Chao often exhibit strange mutations in the process. Many even still carry the memories and skills of their previous incarnations.

Adult Chao are heavily influenced by their treatment as a child, though certain fruits have been known to heavily influence their growth in ways that easily substitute for their upbringing. The most common forms are Hero and Dark Chao, who evolve to reflect their upbringing as children. Some adult Chao evolve specific traits depending on their own recreational activities: infants who enjoyed gliding using their tiny wings as children may gain the power of full-blown flight as adults, particularly rowdy Chao may grow up to be super strong, and so forth. The absolute rarest of the breed is the Chaos Chao, formed by countless reincarnations to take on the semblance of their patron guardian.

Now, the in-game stuff: really, there's no need to restrct Chao. A player may start with one as a companion pet, or even run a full-blown Chao Garden. Really, it's not as if they can affect game balance severely... right?

~Dr. Ivo 'Eggman' Robotnik~
"Snooping as usual, I see!"
-One of the doctor's most famous phrases to date.

History time, kiddies! This man, commonly known simply as Doctor Eggman, is the self-described greatest robotics engineer on the planet. Sadly, instead of using his whopping 300 IQ and very real engineering prowess to create patents and retire as a billionaire, his ambitions have risen to the clichéd desire of world domination. His exact motivation for wanting to rule the world is unknown, though he's been at it since 1991. He is known as the first person to make use of the Chaos Emeralds with modern technology, using the gems as the main power source for an orbital battlestation known as the Death Egg. Since then, his schemes have tended to revolve around obtaining the Chaos Emeralds, though this has a bad habit of backfiring and completely ruining his plans. EVERY SINGLE TIME.

Since the start of his evil career, Eggman has clashed with his archnemesis, Sonic the Hedgehog, whose super speed has outwitted the doctor with near-flawless consistancy. In recent days, the doctor has clearly grown wise to Sonic's usual tactics, and usually forms his plans to accomodate Sonic's unique brand of interference. At this point, it is even rumored that Eggman only stays in the Evil Engineer business so he can continue to clash against his rival, and one day get his revenge.

As far as schemes go, Eggman is a very methodical man. His original plots often involved creating massive hordes of robots, using his nigh-infinite budget to construct a colossal doomsday device, and wreak havoc upon the planet. This was taken to the logical extreme when he allegedly built an entire fleet of flying battleships BY HAND (Cream the Rabbit theorizes that he 'just had a lot of spare time'). His more recent schemes have invariably drifted away from using his OWN creations, instead using the Chaos Emeralds to either take control of some sort of extra-dimensional being, or to power a leftover superweapon from ancient times. Invariably, these plans have ended in the creature or weapon turning on him, which may explain the newfound downtime between his usual numerous plots.

In-Game Stuff: Eggman is, and will always be, the single most common recurring villain in the universe. At all times, Eggman's control is assigned to the GM in charge of a topic that he is involved in; a player may never assume his presence, nor control his actions.

~Metal <CANON CHARACTER>~

Through his crazed creation of Badniks and lust for the destruction of Sonic the Hedgehog, Eggman has made MANY, MANY robotic copies. Many were tossed aside, failed designs, while others--Metal Sonic I (a la Sonic CD, Sonic Heroes), Metal Sonic Mk VII (forum-only canon), and Mecha Sonic (final boss for Knuckles in Sonic 3 & Knuckles, player-controlled canon), respectively--went off for far greater things, the first two vying for world domination. Metal versions of exist of many of the canon characters.

~Cybers~

Cybers are (were, now) a race first created when Cyba, a hedgehog who lived many hundreds, if not thousands, of years ago, discovered the Meteor Crystal, a building-sized gem whose power rivaled the power of the Master Emerald. A sentient entity within endowed him with the power of technology and speed, the new race's power soaring with their Cyberforms, a suit of living metal that lives within them and can be called at any time. The power of their civilization focused around the balance of the Meteor Crystal and the Cyber Crystals, the seven red diamonds that focused the energy of the cosmos. They were a prosperous but highly isolationist nation, their floating kingdom of Cybera thriving for centuries.

However, as foretold by Cyba himself, a dark figure appeared, almost 120 years ago: Lucidi of the house of Malic. Lucidi rallied the young and the unfortunate to rise up, crafting a masterful army that took control of the Cyber Crystals before ultimately storming and seizing the Temple of Cybera, the house of the Meteor Crystal. Soon after, his generals and armies began wiping out all opposition. As troops defected at the sight of their families and homes burning, the death toll rose until Cybers were nearly extinct.

Trying to prevent the destruction of his species, Echeon of the house of Tidus began his own campaign of terror, finding the last Cyber Crystal before Malic could secure it. He then set out destroying the generals, taking the Cyber Crystals until he had all seven. In an epic battle that came close to destroying most of the Cyberan capital, Tidus nearly destroyed Malic. However, by becoming one with the remaining entity of the Meteor Crystal, Malic delivered a crushing blow. Doomed, Tidus created a burst of energy that scattered the Cyber Crystals, his soul passing into one as his body was destroyed in the Dark One's rage.

Since then--nearly 90 years--Cybera has decayed, dropping into the ocean, and now only Cyber City remains. Malic, imbued with the extreme power of the Meteor Crystal, sits upon his throne, waiting for his day to rise and crush the world's superpowers.

~Crisis Stones~

Crisis Stones are mysterious objects of great power, whose powers are only exceeded by their mystery... Although some of them just do stupid things. You just can't tell until you try them. They just seem to mysteriously appear, giving whoever finds them unfathomable abilities... or just attract bees. They're all generally the same shape, but they come in different colors with different symbols on them and each does something unique. They seem to exude a sort of strange energy, not too unlike a Chaos Emerald but without super-charging (mostly), and can be used to power robots. They started appearing around the time the Crisis Emerald emerged in this dimension, and only appeared more frequently once the badnik Metal Crisis, powered by said Crisis Emerald, came on-line. There may be a connection...

How do you get your hands on a Crisis Stone? You could steal them from other characters (Nox and Ciara seem to have the most), or try to take one that was abandoned and just lying around (probably because no one wants them... mostly...). The easiest way, of course, is to go to the AIO Shop and buy one. Crisis Stones are limited, but less expensive than Crisis Stone Z's. The Crisis Stone Z's can also be tailored to your liking, while opting for the cheaper version nets you the next available one from a pre-made list (non-staff members can't choose their own, either). If you have multiple characters, be sure to PM Avernale (or another staff member if you're impatient) to tell him which one gets it. Chosen character will then mysteriously happen upon it. Staff members already know what they do, but if you're non-staff, the only way you'll find out is to try to activate the stone and hope for the best as you wait for a reply.

So far, no one knows how the Crisis Stones were created and for what purpose. However, someone does seem intent on collecting them all, sending Crisis-powered robots to take them by force. And there's the mysterious coyote carnie that may know more than he's letting on...
