Sand kicked up from gentle steps, as a serpentine form rushed to the last known site to be hit by the orbital laser platform; though his feet were uncovered, their calloused bottoms sufficed as suitable protection from the scorching earth underneath him. He was surprised to see how something that was regarded as a safe-haven could be reduced to nothing but rubble, furthermore the sight of death assaulted Xern's senses, it was as though the wastes not unlike his home; though the wastes back home brought with them a warmth of belonging, what he saw only brought a cold desolate feeling, as though caught midst a squall, frigid winds buffeting him. He soon found himself within the presence of the site, as the rubble crept up in the distance with each of his steps, it wouldn't be long before he could look down at what remained of Castle Town.

He didn't wish to stay long, and made it a point not to; however without a steady flow of cash to support him, he couldn't be too picky as to where his work would bring him. He'd come here to pick up a bit of scrap, anything salvageable he would need to bring back. He thought of this as he stood at the edge of the crater, his crimson eyes overseeing the devastation.

The crater spanned the horizon, a huge, barren bowl, ever-sloping. The crater floor was covered with debris, from giant shards of collapsed earth to the occasional, unrecognizable remains of some old building. Little seemed of use, no life existed on this plane. Far off in the distance, miles and miles away, small inspection teams from GUN were assessing the possibility of repopulating or terraforming the area, though it seemed hopeless unless they planned to carry out such a project over fifty to one hundred years. As the reptile took another step, however, the ground gave way, throwing him down, down into the depths, dark and silent and cold.

A tremor shot right up Xern's spine as his false-footing gave way, his gaze wizened to the perilous fall beneath. Instinctively he grabbed onto the wall to slow down his fall as his nails dug into the brittle earth, attempting to claw unto a stop so that he could climb up again. Streams of dust and ashen earth streamed from the claws as they bore into the crater wall, feeling each bit of earth as his claws were ground by the friction. He felt them hot until the moment he'd stopped, a good 10 feet from where he'd stood previously. Casually he glanced down, attempting to devise if he could slowly make his way to the crater's depths.

The wall, however, did not agree with his attempts; it gave way, crumbling, moist from what little remnants of moisture had sunk to its level. He landed hard, on his back, though his head was saved from injury from his angle of impact. The chamber he fell to was completely dark save for what little light poured from above. Flowing water echoed throughout the room--it seemed likely that the cavern sported either a waterfall or some form of underground stream.

He grunted as he desperately clung to the wall, his claws slowly giving way to erosion as he unceremoniously fell off the wall. Managing to turn his head towards the ground, he attempted to tumble through the fall, curling... he found he'd done so too late as he struck the ground, a shock ran up his spine as he'd crashed; he felt the air in his lungs leaving him as he gasped, the pain was unbearable, however he'd deal with it in its due time. It took him a moment to gather himself, as his eyes, heavy-lidded as they were, opened to unveil his surroundings. Slowly he pushed himself off the ground, his bemused expression according to the oppressive feeling in his lower back. He took a moment to calm himself, closing his eyes he found peace, and the sound of running water. He was enveloped in darkness, save for what little light could enter unto the depths of the crater. Not one to leave things to chance he rose a hand before him as he conjured a flame, attempting to light up the area around him.

He looked at his surroundings and attempted to find the source of the water.

The cave seemed to have come into existence in recent history; the ceiling and floor were bare, nearly-flat surfaced. The light reflected off ash-laden water, definitely not safe to drink, which ran from wall to wall. Where it flowed, a small passageway had opened up, possible from a release of pressure some time ago. Odd sounds echoed just below the volume of understanding, taunting Xern's ear membrane.

His gaze strayed unto the flow of the stream of black, its ashen surface reminding of onyx as its glossy black surface ran within the constraints of the little fissure which had no doubt formed from the impact. Without much else to go, Xern thought to seek out the source of the odd sounds that had caught his attention, heading through the small passageway.

The tunnel appeared quite short, though the passage took nearly fifteen minutes to traverse. It opened into a large, domed room, an inhuman structure. A vast mosaic spanned the inside the dome, depicting a hedgehog--or was it? It seemed similar to the common anthropomorphic mammals, at least in shape. However, their eyes were a single, crescent shape, with no mouth, their chest faceted with an odd design. The light from the room shone from the ceiling, from a single, red crystal, giving out purely-mixed white light instead of the red one would think it should. The floor was covered with strange, circular designs, the center rings raising five times, the center of the room sporting a simple, round pedestal. The pedestal beckoned.

As he stepped into the tunnel, the site of light made vanish the flame that had been conjured into Xern's hand; his eyes darted about the passage until he'd finally reached the lit dominion of this entire crater. He was marveled by the dome-like structure that he'd uncovered, observing the drawings upon the wall with curious detail, thinking he'd never encountered such creatures before. The single, crescent like shape of their eyes seemed a disturbing thing to behold. His eyes then fell upon the sight of the pedestal, verily drawing him towards it.

As the reptile approached the inner circle, the symbols around him lit up, some seeming to rise slightly in the air, though it appeared to be a simple, convincing mirage. The gold light stole from the crystal's shine, though never completely. When he reached the top step, before the pedestal, the light ceased, the dome plummeting into cold, complete ebony. With a flash, however, the complex symbols lit up, and the gem shone with a much lower level, far from its former garishness. It hovered, then dropped slowly, landing on the pedestal. It was a simple diamond, though more square-like than diamond-like, barely stretched upwards. It seemed to have been made to fit in the palm of one's hand. The power it radiated was immense, like a weaker yet more unstable Chaos Emerald, its red surface reflecting Xen's snout.
