Believe in me who believes in you!

The sun shone brightly overhead as Echeon peered across the horizon. "We should be within reach, cap'n!" he said jokingly, the family-man captain looking across the prow towards the horizon. The saltiness of the air clung to every hair, feather, and quill of the crew, especially Echeon, whose arduous journey's end seemed to be so close to concluding. Producing a pair of binoculars--which Echeon called a "spyglass," again jokingly--the purple-feathered hawk seemed to pierce the curvature of the planet.

"I would recognize that beach and skyline anywhere! Central City is within reach!" he shouted, releasing his binoculars to fall to his chest. Jumping, the white hedgehog fervently scratched his chest, especially around the gem that pierced through his flesh; a nasty habit, to be sure, as the gem-line usually got infected after nervous scratching fits. Echeon speedily jumped from starboard to port, prow to stern, the secondary family that was the crew congratulating each other on a successful journey. With each passing moment, buildings appeared, rising higher into the atmosphere as the barge neared the Emerald Beach, their destination. A month before, the captain had arranged a disembarking at the small docks, fitting for such a civilian vessel.

"So, Tidus," Captain Arthor said, "Any plans for your first day in the brave world of Central City?"

The hedgehog stared wildly into the distance. After a few moments of day dreaming, he answered simply, "No, not really."

"What?! Do you even have a place to stay?!"

"Nope. The blessings of Pora shall provide in the end. I must simply take these new experiences as they come," he replied calmly.

"Quite zen, yet equally idiotic at the same time. I like your style," Arthor said, his beak stretching wide with a smile.

In less than an hour at full speed, the rusty barge docked at a public pier, Echeon saying his final goodbyes to the crew. Hugs, handshakes, and the occasional cheek-kiss sent him off on his way with little but the shoddy leather bag at his side. Waves and final farewells may have broken some, but Echeon took it as energy, to not disappoint his friends on this journey he so bravely took upon himself! With no plans for shelter, or even money of his own, the luck of Arthor's kind gift--30 rings--put Echeon forever in his debt, a debt he would certainly repay, someday. His mind focused on little more than his path, towards a small resort that seemed to lead to some sort of plaza.

Among the tourists and sunbathing humans, Echeon stood out, though little noticed him. His chest felt strange in this new land, the gem glowing faintly, just barely undetectable, from the residue of massive amounts of chaos energy that had once destroyed this city. He learned well of such instances, especially of the man known Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik, mad scientist and self-certified "genius." Echeon long held a skeptical stance towards his true genius--what sort of prodigy would vie for the destruction of the world instead of the betterment thereof?

Rounding the pool, Tidus entered the hotel through the back entrance, looking around for a counter of some sort. The luxurious lobby of the hotel appeared empty, save for a man sitting back in a chair, reading a book; Echeon rang the small, golden bell on the counter. "Excuse me?" he said. The man stood at attention, afraid that his boss had noticed his slacking. He relaxed after he noticed the hedgehog.

"I apologize, sir, I didn't see you there. What can I do for you? Would you like a room?"

"Actually, I would... unfortunately I'm from a foreign land and seem to only have... thirty rings?"

"Unfortunately, our lowest package is two hundred..." the clerk said reluctantly. As a look of disappointment spread across Echeon's face, he felt horrible. "I'm really sorry, I'd let you stay but I'm close to losing this job as it is!"

Echeon exhaled cleanly, his grief dissipating as he concentrated on the fortunes of his situation. "It is no problem! Do not worry. I will be fine," he finished. The clerk raised a hand to stop him, but Echeon had already left, heading out into the streets.

A sign strapped above a set of glass doors read "Station Square"; through the powers of deduction, Echeon guessed that was where he was. The signs of destruction wrought by Chaos were long since covered up, though the horrifying pictures of a rampant god still stung in Echeon's heart. Buildings destroyed, thousands dead, the only force that could fight that being used the Chaos Emeralds as well: Sonic the Hedgehog. Long-range video featured that golden blur as he struck that god down, showing that Sonic was possibly the closest to a god that a mortal could become.

Scratching his chest around his gem, he walked the city streets for nearly half an hour, seeking some form of shelter before the night conquered the day. His contingency plan involved an alleyway and some trashed cardboard, though he dreaded the thought. Though usually calm, being dirty bothered Echeon greatly, especially since his quills were such a pale, ivory color. While dirt drew little attention, the filth of others--garbage, among more horrible things--often sent him into fits of panic if he had the chance to wash himself off.

"I must be strong," he told himself as the sun sank further down. The sidewalks bustled with activity, having found his way downtown.

((Oh hi there.))

A small distance away, a human was acting very very strange.

This city was... nerve-wracking. There was so much here that could be fatal. Things such as cars, armed policemen, thugs, buildings, revolving doors, windows, sofas...

Zeel took a deep breath. She had made it this far. It had taken her a long long time to get away from the lab, though now that she looked she couldn't remember why she had even bothered. Surely they would notice her missing and come to hunt her down? They would take her back to the lab, right? Then what? Perhaps nothing, but what if... what if they decided that she was too much of a threat now that had managed to escape once? What if they decided it was best to “put her down”? There were so many ways for it to happen in the laboratory, and nobody would even have to hear about it. What if they didn't even wait till she was back at the lab? What if they were up on the roofs right now with a sniper rifle? Or in those windows...

Zeel shuddered and tried to make herself look small. Maybe they wouldn't notice her, mayb- no. She couldn't live like this. She had escaped and has taken care to cover her tracks. They couldn't find her, not this fast. She needed to grow a backbone. Zeel quickly stood up rigid. Right. Good. Now keep going as if she was invincible. That was the ticket. That's what normal people did... Hide your fear. Zeel quickly went back to walking forwards, keeping an eye on everything as calmly as possible, at least until she saw the hedgehog. Zeel had never seen a hedgehog before in the sheltered lab, at least not one like this. It walked on two legs, which was strange enough, but even stranger was the gem in it's chest. It was a bright red. Zeel liked red. It was the most trustworthy color. It never lied. If you bled, the red gave you an honest warning of where the problem was and exactly how bad it was. If something was on fire, it showed you just how large the fire was, as well as how powerful. The most trustworthy thing she had was red.

She wasn't sure about the white, however. White wasn't amazingly trustworthy. White was the color they put on the walls and over the windows to keep you from looking out. White blinded your eyes.

What WAS this thing, anyway? Some sort of robot? Was the thing on it's chest some sort of power source? It was breathing. Did robots breathe? She had never seen a breathing robot. Hmmm.

Well. It wasn't human. That made it less of a threat, right? No. That made it more of a threat. She should get as far away from it as possible.

But that would involve her letting it out of her sight. Bad idea. It could sneak attack her if she did that. Zeel had gotten used to the idea that humans didn't walk up and attack other humans from behind for no reason, and had forced herself to stop being scared of such an event. But this thing was, as she had noted before, certainly not human.

Zeel continued to stare, wide eyed, at the creature. She would follow it. Would that make it mad? Yes. But what if it was mad already? She would just have to look as though she was not following the creature.

A few minutes later, it was quite obvious that a career in spying would be quite impossible for Zeel, as she was quite obviously attempting to follow the thing while staying out of sight in face palmingly bad ways, such as sidling along walls while in plain view. Hide and Seek had NOT been a popular game in the laboratory.

Echeon noticed he was being followed soon after Zeel had started; it was easy to recognize someone staring at you constantly while moving in the same direction. Turning into a wide alley, clear of any vagrants, he set his trap, moving most of the way through it before turning on his heel and pointing towards the girl. "Why are you following me?" he asked. His ocean-blue eyes stared deeply into hers; never before had he heard of a human with such odd eyes.

"You've been following me--quite ridiculously, I might add--for three blocks!" he said, his voice strong with inflection, his accent thick with the short consonants of his homeland, a calmed rage. He controlled the volume, harnessing the shear power of speech and stresses to sound more strong and in control than he was. He dropped his bag as he spoke, readying for fight or flight, his instincts kicking in. Someone who followed with such obviousness had to be either somewhat stupid, extremely dangerous, or, worst case, both.

Zeel, being the totally amazing super spy that she was, fell for the trap quite easily. She seemed quite startled when Echeon turned and actually threw herself to the ground when he pointed, as if she expected the finger to shoot invisible bullets at her or something. Soon it became apparent that the finger wasn't going to shoot her, so she quickly climbed back to her feet. “I don't know what you're talking about.” She lied, the first part sounded nervous, but about midway through the “know” Zeel had managed to make her voice calm. It was quite a strange effect. She eyed the hedgehog's dropped bag briefly. All kinds of things could be in that bag. Heck, the bag itself could be used as a choking weapon. Bags were easily flammable though...

Zeel found it strange that no one else was in the alley, but had a feeling that this probably meant that two people wouldn't both walk into it on coincidence often. So much for that excuse. She desperately searched her mind for a decent lie, but none of them sounded that convincing so she settled for a slightly modified version of the truth.

“I'm sorry.” She said, her voice still maintaining its calm facade. “I'm new here. This is my first time...” she stopped to think of a way to get her point across without giving away the fact that she was an escaped lab experiment. “Out of my home.” she decided. That seemed innocent enough, right? “It's far away from here. I don't want to go back, and I don't know where to go. You were... easily noticeable. I followed you to see where you would go.” Not EXACTLY the truth, but pretty close. “I've never seen anythi- anyBODY like you before. What are you?” She regretted saying it. She especially regretted accidentally calling the thing a thing. Hopefully it wouldn't get too mad? Zeel prepared to run, just in case.

Echeon stared inquisitively at the girl for a moment, before the air erupted with a heart laugh. "What I am shouldn't be important, but who I am!" he said, still laughing. To see someone that was once a threat act with such innocence, and such a believable--yet highly vague--motive filled him with cheer, the sheer irony of it overweighing everything he had thought before. Grabbing his back, he moved toward Zeel, extending a hand. "I'm Echeon Tidus, hedgehog and traveler extraordinaire," he said with a grin, making his hyperbole obvious.

Zeel hesitated for a moment before shaking the hand. She had shaken hands before. Shaking hands seemed safe and normal. “My name's Zeel.” Re replied to his introduction. “Just... Zeel.” She couldn't think of any interesting titles that would involve “extraordinaire” that didn't also involve something meaning more or less “Lab Mutant”. She mentally thought back to a hedgehog they had back in the lab. It wasn't very tall, scurried about on four feet, and spent most of it's time getting chemical fluids injected into it. She decided it would be best to avoid this train of thought. She also decided that giving a last name wasn't smart. Heck, giving a first name wasn't smart, either.

“No hard feelings, right?”

"Of course not!" he said as their grips released. She was quirky, he thought, but perhaps trustworthy. At least until he--or they--found some shelter. Beckoning her, he continued across the length of the alleyway to the next street. "The sun is setting," Echeon observed, though the skyline blocked the sunset. Streetlights flickered on several blocks away, the lines of light slowly traveling towards them. "Do you have any place I could stay, by chance? I'm a bit short in financial terms, and I'd rather not sleep out on the streets after spending all that time to get here!" he said as he turned, walking down the sidewalk. "Perhaps I should have stayed on the boat," he said to himself, rubbing his chest.

Zeel followed the hedgehog carefully. She didn't really trust him, but he seemed more trustworthy than certain other people she had met since leaving. The observed that the sun was, indeed setting. That worried her. “No.” She replied to Echeon's question. “I have nothing except the clothes I'm. I was rather in a hurry when I left.” She paused for a moment before adding a quiet “Sorry.”. At least they wouldn't be cold. She could start a fire easily, it was all a matter of not letting the hedgehog see her do it. “Perhaps that would have been a good idea, but then again, lots of deadly things can happen in boats. Especially ones sitting over water.” The girl wasn't quiet sure why she had said the line, but it was too late to take it back. How did one acquire things like a house, anyway? Zeel had been given things on a needed basis, she didn't even really know how to get rings, though she did know what they were used for. “Perhaps we can find a house that no one is using?” she suggested carefully. It would be better than the street, but only slightly.

Echeon nodded as he kept moving. "Yes, we could, but the chances of that in such a large city are very small. Also, I would feel bad, morally, about squatting. It's also illegal," he said, peering high into the 40- and 50-story buildings that rose above. Such marvels of architecture and engineering, defying the very laws of nature--gravity, wind, tremors, and the like. However, it disturbed him that only humans did such things, while all of his kind, the "animals," chose much simpler lives.

"At this rate we might as well go back to the alley," he said, stopping. The streetlights had already caught them, shining brightly, the light focused at their feet. He turned to go back, passing Zeel with little thought, as he did to mere acquaintances. After finding the empty alley, he turned into it, looking for anything that might serve as a good spot for rest. "I have a blanket twice my size that you can use if you wish," he offered kindly, setting his bag down next to a shipping pallet, left there by some old delivery vehicle or perhaps someone from the great structures around them.

Echeon jumped twice to test the weight-bearing capabilities of the object before sitting down on its edge. He removed his shoes, clawed feet revealing themselves, toes stretching outward, their joints popping. Unzipping his bag, he procured the aforementioned blanket, setting it beside him, as well as revealing a sealed, metal container with freshly-prepared stew. "We had this only a day ago, it should have kept. Do you know how to start a fire?" he asked.

Squatting? Like bending down? What?

Zeel decided it must have something to do with houses that didn't belong to you. She'd keep it in mind. She didn't seem to notice, or even mind, the fact that he passed her without thinking. Heck, she probably preferred it that way. She turned and followed him back to the alley

“It's not very safe.” She muttered quietly, not really wanting to complain, but feeling like the hedgehog needed to know, anyway. “No thanks, I'll be fine.” She replied when asked about the blanket. She didn't trust ANYBODY enough to sleep under something of theirs. There could be some sort of poison or something in the thing.

“Fire? Yes. I'm good at making fires.” Zeel replied. There didn't seem to be any decent place out of view to build it, though. The girl looked carefully for some sort of fuel that didn't seem too horribly dirty. Zeel knew about fires, they tended to throw bits of their fuel into the air. This seemed all fine and dandy until you took into account what was being burned here, which was basically a few bits of moderately clean cardboard and a piece of wood quite possibly from a chair.

“How big of a fire do you need?” She asked before sitting with her back to the hedgehog, so to prevent him actually seeing what she was doing. “And for how long?”
